You’ve heard the phrase a million times in history or economics class. “Laissez-faire” — “let them do as they will.” It’s often presented as a relic of 19th and 20th century American business practices; a policy that invokes a rabid, unchecked capitalism of bygone days. The phrase brings to mind Rockefellers, railroads, and greedy millionaires raising empires on the backs of starving child laborers.
